Studio 56 when no free synth has your sound
Answer in brief
Studio 56 is our editorial choice for the times no free synth has the sound you want. It is not free. You describe the synth in plain words and it builds an instrument with its own controls and presets on Studio 56 Pro, which starts with a free trial. If you want to spend nothing, install one open-source synth such as Surge XT and one free synth with a different engine, then play the same bass line and pad on both before you add a third.
Studio 56 publishes this site and is not free, so read its place here as our own pick for the sounds the free synths miss. It is not a measured ranking of every free synth VST.
Studio 56 is not one of the free synths
Studio 56 is our editorial choice on this site, and it is the one entry that costs money. It runs on Pro, which starts with a free trial. If you cancel before the first payment you pay nothing, and the price after the trial is on the pricing page.
What you describe and what you get
You type the synth you want into the Studio 56 plugin, such as “a round analog bass that brightens as I play harder” or “an icy FM bell pad that slowly opens up”. It builds an instrument with its own controls and presets, usually in about 5 minutes, and the instrument plays in Studio 56 on a track in your DAW. It also appears in your Studio 56 library by itself.
You can keep changing the instrument after it is built and ask for new presets. Studio 56 does not write fresh code for each one. It chooses from about a hundred verified DSP blocks and sets and connects them to match your words. Its oscillators include wavetable, virtual-analog, FM, granular and sub types.
When a free synth is the better pick
If a preset in Surge XT or Vital is already close, tweak it and keep your money. If you work on Linux, Studio 56 has no version for it while most synths here do. Pro Tools users cannot load Studio 56 at all. And if you want to learn synthesis by turning every knob of a classic layout, Tyrell N6 or TAL-NoiseMaker teaches that well.
Before you start the trial
- On a Mac it runs as VST3 or AU, on Windows as VST3, in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio and most other DAWs except Pro Tools.
- Making a new instrument needs an internet connection, and playing one you already made does not.
- What you make can go into songs, videos, live shows and commercial releases. The instruments themselves are not yours to sell.

Questions and answers
Is Studio 56 a free synth?
No. It is Pro, which starts with a free trial, and you pay nothing if you cancel before the first payment. Every other synth in the directory is the free kind.
Can Studio 56 rebuild a free synth I already like?
It builds its own instrument from your description, so describe what you like about the sound. It does not copy another synth’s code or presets.
